Capital Gains Student Leadership Conference
The Capital Gains Advertising Student Conference was a huge success with 154 students registering from eleven colleges around Mississippi. Mississippi Gulf Coast Ad Fed, MS Delta Ad Fed, Golden Triangle Ad Fed along with Jackson Ad Fed worked closely for four months to pull the conference together. We were approached throughout the day by students and faculty thanking and commending us on a wonderful advertising conference. We have received e-mails from students excited about next year’s conference.

Mississippi State University had the top three resumes submitted in the resume contest. For her efforts, Crystal Coleman from MSU won a pair of tickets to see David Letterman in New York, Fox News Studio tour, two tickets to see Fox’s "Day Side" with Linda Vester, tour of ADWEEK’s New York office along with a $150 gift card from McRae’s.

This event could not have been the success it was without the hard work from each Ad Club and our sponsors. The Delta made the initial phone contacts to the colleges and table tents (thank you Kim and Robby), the Gulf Coast printed the student directory, helped with the agenda, and designed the logo (thank you Denise, Trudi and Amber), Jackson secured the location, food donations, designed and printed the brochure (thank you Eddie Streety and the JAF board). We are an incredible TEAM!

A special thanks to the Jackson State University’s e-Center for donating the facility. If your company is looking for a meeting or conference facility please give them a look… the facility was outstanding!

Spring 2002 Student Portfolio Workshop
Graphic Design students from Hinds Community College and Mississippi College participated in the Spring Student Portfolio Workshop conducted jointly by Production Services Association and the Jackson Ad Fed. This workshop was part two of an ongoing effort to help students prepare for the job market. The first workshop, held in the fall, consisted of portfolio presentations by local industry professionals. The spring workshop required that students bring their own portfolios for professionals to evaluate.

Twelve students met on Saturday, March 23 at Mac Papers for this two-hour seminar. Portfolio reviewers were Anne-Marie Cain of Scoutworx, Suzi Jochimsen of Marketing Design, Jerrod Partridge of JBHM, Jim Temple of Ergon, Gigi Turner of The Ramey Agency, and Mac McKeigney of Communication Arts Company.

At the close of the event, hostess Michele Rabalais of Mac Papers drew for the door prize, a computer package consisting of a Power Computing cpu, 16" monitor, external modem, extended keyboard, zip drive, 2 external speakers, and a laser printer. Special thanks to George Otvos of EGO Design in Nashville for donating this wonderful gift. Casita Brittain from Mississippi College was very excited to be the recipient of the door prize.

Our thanks go to Mac Papers for opening their doors to host the event, and to Jerrod Partridge for photographing it. Special thanks to co-chairs Anne-Marie Cain and Jim Temple for an outstanding workshop, and to all the professionals who gave of their time and shared their insights. The future of our industry depends on those who learn from us today.

Fall 2001 Student Portfolio Workshop
Graphic Design students from Hinds Community College and Mississippi College participated in the first Fall Student Portfolio Workshop conducted jointly by Production Services Association and the Jackson Ad Fed. Over 20 students, along with their instructors, met on Saturday, November 10 at Mac Papers for a four-hour presentation of portfolio tips by several local industry professionals. PSA President Tammy Smith (Production Manager for Maris, West & Baker) thanked the attendees and host, and told the students about PSA and Ad Club and their commitment to helping students. The first presenter, Kim Townsend, owner of Townsend Advertising, explained how she shows completed collateral pieces in a traditional portfolio case as ideas and examples for both potential and existing clients. She likes to encase the samples in her book so that they are easily removable from both the bottom and top of the sheet. Steve Erickson, Senior Art Director for the Cirlot Agency, further illustrated how a variety of talents can be exhibited in a standard portfolio presentation. He prefers lightly taping work into the book, with additional samples of pieces neatly stowed in the back for hands-on inspection if desired.

Tana Kosiyabong, Art Director for Maris, West & Baker, showed the mini-book he chose to use as a leave behind at interviews. He explained economical ways to produce such a piece, tips for organizing the work presented, and the benefit of having a scaled-down version of your portfolio for potential employers to keep. This allows him to keep one full-size master portfolio to show in person, and he also keeps a digital version on a web site.

Senior Interactive Designer Craig West of 121 Micro gave a unique presentation of his online portfolio, exhibiting how both digital and print projects could be presented together. Maintaining his personal web site gives clients the opportunity to browse through his work at their leisure, or allows him to maneuver the site himself at presentations. The last portfolio example was shared by Anne-Marie Cain, a Designer for Scoutworx, and co-chair of the workshop on behalf of both PSA and Ad Club. Anne-Marie's work was uniquely bound in a hand-made box of her own creation, which itself was an excellent example of her talent. The individual pages of her portfolio are mounted photographic replications showcasing a variety of projects.

Following the portfolio presentations, Senior Copywriter Randy Lynn of Maris, West & Baker shared a creative director's insight on portfolio review. He demonstrated several mistakes the students should be sure to avoid in their books, including typographical and grammatical errors. He gave tips about where to seek employment, and how vital a good attitude and work ethic are in not only obtaining, but in keeping a good job. As the closing presenters, Graphic Designer Gigi Turner of Maris, West & Baker joined the day's hostess Michele Rabalais in a "mini" paper seminar to familiarize the students with one of the printing industry's main elements. As Mac Paper's Spec Rep, Michele shared an overview of her vast knowledge of papers, and gave a quick tour of the company's warehouse. Gigi Turner concluded by showing print samples on various stocks, explaining why each one was chosen for that particular project. Both the students and their instructors, Michael Hataway from HCC and Stephen Cook from MC, asked questions freely from all the presenters, and participated in open discussions on such topics as the changes in printing practices. According to the evaluations they completed, most are planning to attend the follow-up workshop in Spring 2002. PSA and JAF will look forward to another rewarding opportunity of sharing our bounty of knowledge with these future graphic arts professionals.

Our thanks go to Mac Papers for opening their doors to host the event, and to Tracy Duncan of Hinds Community College for photographing it. Special thanks to co-chairs Anne-Marie Cain and Jim Temple (of Ergon) for an outstanding workshop, and to all the professionals who gave of their time and shared their insights. The future of our industry depends on those who learn from us today.
